Biography

Romanian Soprano Iulia Maria Dan’s “richly coloured, beautifully finished but still radiantly clear sound” (Sydney Morning Herald) has made her in demand in prestigious theaters, including the Bayerische Staatsoper, Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

Recent standout roles include Mimì in La Bohème, Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro and Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello. Ms. Dan’s 2024/25 season sees her making a series of important company debuts, including the Volksoper Wien as Micaëla in a new production of Carmen by Lotte de Beer and Teatro San Carlo di Napoli in a new production of Rusalka by Dimitri Tcherniakov. Further highlights include a return to one of her signature roles, Desdemona, at Israeli Opera and Micaëla at Hong Kong Arts festival . On the concert platform, she embarks on a major European tour together with Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre singing Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus). The tour begins at the Festspiele Baden-Baden, marking her house debut, and continues with her return to Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Additional performances are held in Seville (Teatro de la Maestranza), Valencia (Palau de la Musica), Tenerife (Auditorio de Tenerife) and Gran Canaria (Alfredo Kraus Auditorio).

Recent highlights include Desdemona in a new production of Otello at Oper Leipzig; Mimì with Opera Australia, Semperoper Dresden and Staatsoper Hamburg; and Tatyana (Eugene Onegin) with Norwegian National Opera and Semperoper Dresden. Mozart - specifically the “Da Ponte trilogy” -has formed an important part of her seasons. She sang Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Contessa (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Fiordiligi (Così fan Tutte) as part of a special Da Ponte Trilogy production with Les Musiciens du Louvre, with performances at the Ravenna Festival, Opéra de Versailles, the Israeli Opera, Opéra national de Bordeaux and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and sang Fiordiligi and Contessa at the Staatsoper Hamburg and Semperoper Dresden. Other recent performances include Musetta (La Bohème), Violetta (La Traviata), and Micaëla with the Semperoper Dresden, Aminta (Il re pastore) with the Verbier Festival; the title role of Massenet’s Manon with Oper Graz; Tatyana, Freia (Das Rheingold), Mathilde (Guillaume Tell), Rosalinde, Helena (A Midsummer Night’ s Dream) and Agathe (Der Freischütz) at the Staatsoper Hamburg, Ofelia in Franco Faccio's Amleto at the Bregenz Festival; Gilda (Rigoletto) and Violetta for Romanian National Opera, Micaëla at Opéra de Rouen and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, and the premiere of Stefan Wirth’s Francesca da Rimini at the Münchner Opernfestspiele.

Recent successes on the concert platform include the Verdi Requiem with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Edward Gardner at the Royal Festival Hall, with Daniele Gatti and Munich Philharmonic and with Dan Ettinger and the Israeli Opera Orchestra, the Zemlinksy Lyric Symphony with Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen conducted by Ariane Matiakh; Beethoven Symphony No.9 with the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa conducted by Marc Minkowski, at the Verbier Festival and with Staatstheater Kassel; a programme of Mozart arias at Lviv MozArt Festival conducted by Oksana Lyniv; the Vier Letzte Lieder at the YST Conservatory of Music in Singapore, a gala concert together with Freddie de Tommaso at the Smetana Festival in Litomyšl, and the Beethoven Cantata for the Death of Emperor Josef with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Mark Wigglesworth.

Ms. Dan was a member of the ensemble at the Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Hamburg and the Bayerische Staatsoper - where she began as a member of their prestigious Opernstudio -before embarking on a freelance career in 2021. A graduate of the National University of Music in Bucharest, Dan is a recipient of many prizes and awards at competitions such as Most Promising Young Artist at the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition where she was also awarded the Graz Opera Special Prize and the Soroptimist Prize, the Hariclea Darclee International Singing Competition, and the Ionel Perlea National Song Competition.
